It is always a good idea to pop a bunch of corn when watching a movie with friends, the games or even all alone with your zapper and the tube. Even if you don’t think you feel like popcorn, it just takes a couple minutes of microwave time for that popcorn-infused air to fill your lungs and make you realize, yes, a handful of popcorn – or two – is exactly what is needed. Adding superfluous amounts of salt and butter is never a bad idea but … let’s get creative for a change. Lemongrass popcorn? Cool Ranch popcorn? A Japanese twist with furikake? These combos make the popcorn even more savory and meal-esque.
Here are some flavors to get adventurous with.
|Smoked Paprika, Parsley
2 tablespoons hot or mild smoked paprika, 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley leaves, and 1 teaspoon popcorn salt. Drizzle the popcorn with 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil in a large bowl and toss to coat. Add the seasoning mix and toss again. Serve.
|Nutritional Yeast, Cumin
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast with a 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, a pinch of cayenne pepper, and 1 teaspoon popcorn salt. Drizzle the popcorn with 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil in a large bowl and toss to coat. Add the seasoning mix and toss again. Serve.
|Pesto Cheesy Garlic
1 ounce of Parmigiano-Reggiano with 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves, 1 garlic clove, and 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until finely ground. Drizzle the popcorn with 2 tablespoons melted butter in a large bowl and toss to coat. Add the seasoning mix and toss again. Serve.
|”Buffalo Wings” Red Hot Pepper, Butter
2 tablespoons butter with 2 tablespoons Frank’s Red Hot sauce in a small microwave-safe cup. Heat on high power at 15 second intervals until completely melted. Toss with popcorn in a large bowl and serve.
