No matter what was said in Back to the Future, a flying car would still very much need roads. However, Boston-based Terrafugia believes they have made the best compromise they can with the Transition, a street-legal flying car.

Yes, you read that right: You may soon be seeing a plane next to you on the road. But what would it be like to own the $279,000 Transition?

Out of the garage just like your regular everyday car.

It is rear-wheel drive, but we don't really expect spirited on-road handling.

And it runs on super-unleaded fuel, so that means you can fill it up yourself at any gas station.

The Transition has to take off from an airport. Sorry, but there is no easy way to get out of traffic.

At the press of a button, the wings fold down and the awkward looking car becomes an interesting looking plane.

…and take off!

A full load of fuel will let the plane fly for about four hours at a cruising speed of 105 MPH.

Back to base.

And a quiet drive back home.

At $279,000, it might be a tough sell. It'll be interesting to see if the Transition can take off with plane enthusiasts.
